WhatsApp to soon let you mute group chats forever, and we can’t be more thankful

WhatsApp is going to introduce and option for you to mute chats forever. Currently in beta, this new feature replaces the mute for one year option with an ‘Always’.

WhatsApp is constantly adding new features to make the chat experience better and now besides highly demanded ‘expiring message’ feature, the app is soon going to give you an option of muting group chats ‘forever’.

We often get added to WhatsApp groups that we cannot leave - could be one with very old friends who you barely speak to or family members who believe in sending ‘Good morning’ messages and forwards every morning. To avoid being called rude (or some other related adjective) you perhaps have been sticking around keeping these chats on mute so as you don’t have to deal with them.

So far, WhatsApp was only letting you mute chats, one-on-one chats and group chats, for a span of eight hours, one week or one year at the maximum. Once this time period would expire, you would ideally have to remember to mute the concerned chat again. This is essentially not too much work, it takes a few seconds to mute a chat, but it’s annoying and is that one more thing you should not have to do.

Making things easier, WhatsApp is going to introduce and option for you to mute chats forever. Currently in beta, this new feature replaces the mute for one year option with an ‘Always’.

Spotted by WABetaInfo, the screenshot shared by the forum shows that the eight hour and one-week mute options are still going to be around, the new addition is the ‘Always’ option that can silence those pesky groups forever. You don’t need to leave them, you can carry on ignoring them as you were.

This does away with the need to mute individual chats and group chats again once your one year of peace is over. Of course, if you want to go back to receiving messages from the Group or from a person you have muted, you can just unmute them and all is back to normal.

WABetaInfo tells us that the feature is currently ‘under development’ and should roll out soon.
