GOOGLE FINALLY CANCELS CONTROVERSIAL GOOGLE PHOTOS SUBSCRIPTION FEATURE
Finally, Google is saying goodbye to its very confusing (and controversial) Google Photos subscription service. This news comes in the form of an email sent to all subscribers saying that the company is ending the trial program.
The subscription feature allowed users to pay $7.99 per month to automatically receive ten printed photos from your Google Photos library directly to their homes. Sound alright? However, the major drawback of the service is that you cannot pick your own photos! Google Photos “intelligently” picks those ten pictures and delivers them to your doorstep.
The model didn’t really work out as Google expected as many people have random pictures of receipts, screenshots, etc., that one wouldn’t want to pay to get printed! Also, $7.99 for 10 photos + shipping is still an outrageous cost when you can get a single photo printed at Costco for less than $0.25. Though users can customize what type of photos they want to receive, the options were fairly limited. Users can select between ‘’Mostly people and pets’, ‘Mostly landscape’ or ‘A little bit of everything’. However, you would mostly end up switching out Google’s selection for something else.
According to Droid Life, subscribers received an email saying: “Thank you for your invaluable feedback these last several months. You have provided us with a lot of helpful information about how we can evolve this feature, which we hope to make more widely available. Please keep your eyes open for future updates. Although we will be ending the trial program, we hope that you have experienced some joy from the prints you received along the way.”
The canceling of this subscription feature doesn’t affect Google Photos or Google’s photo printing service “Photo Books” in any way. It just means that Google has learned people don’t want to pay for printed-photos that they can’t even select! Though Google was obviously trying to play a surprise angle, so users can be excited to see what photos were sent to them every month, I’d rather just pick my own photos.
